I'm curious, did anybody nominate Wrong?

I loved Wrong so much it could easily make my top 50. The same may be true of Bigbug. A conversation could be had about which is the best Jeunet (or Jeunet et Caro) movie, but Bigbug is easily the one that gave me the most laughs. But Wrong feels like *mwah* pure genius.

My only reservation about those two titles has to do with the fact that I've seen them so recently they haven't had time to age, which seems particularly important for comedy. Case in point: I used to think Office Space was one of the funniest things I'd ever seen, but when I watch it now it seems a lot more like a one–note comedy that was right for its time and place.

I don't think I've ever seen one his films. I have something of his lying around my house (Identity? or something like that), but I've kind of forgotten about my physical media ever since I've latched onto my streaming services.

And The Hangover has made its inevitable appearance.

I guess I should be happy these people didn't vote it into the top 10, like some of those Bro Cunts there are clearly sad it didn't manage to do.

Good Lord, imagine being sad when your love for an enormously succesful blockbuster, shit-bag comedy doesn't get reflected back to you exactly as you had hoped. It must be devastating to find your painfully generic tastes aren't shared by every human being on the planet.

Oh hush.  It's officially funnier than M.A.S.H now.

Yes. Reality.

Apparently MASH shouldn't have even made the list, according to that tit who thinks the Hangover is the funniest movie ever made. A high watermark for comedy sophistication, that one.

Had to scroll back a bunch of pages to see who you were referring to. I guessed correctly.

I'm not gonna lie, I basically just look at the picks, chime in with my two cents and abruptly leave. Seems to better for my sanity.

I feel kinda bad that I chirped Minio earlier for being a sourpuss... But he was right.

Btw Crumb, have you seriously never heard of The Nice Guys? I think JJ had it on his best of three 2010s list. A rare modern comedy that is actually both well made and funny.

I had it at, like, #99.  So technically, yeah.  I enjoyed it, but the bell curve is that there's not a whole lot of good comedies from the last decade.

Yup.  I have no idea why anyone is mad about it.  He doesn't mention anything about trans-issues. or anything remotely offensive.  It's a 40 minute address to students at his arts-oriented high school in DC on sticking to your dream, working hard and being true to yourself - typical commencement stuff.  Mostly autobiographical and pretty touching and, with Dave, impossible to not be occasionally hilarious.

I think they're mad that he's still "allowed" a platform, and would be upset at anything he did regardless of the content.  But it may also have to do with some of the hate I saw about his getting an Emmy nomination for The Closer (which is weird because I thought that was well over a year ago).

So there's talk about whether or not Robin Williams will make the list.

Personally, I think that Good Morning Vietnam and Mrs. Doubtfire are shoo-ins, though maybe I'm misreading that crowd.  Neither would be my choices.  I do have to admit that my favorite Robin Williams films - Garp, Moscow on the Hudson, Fisher King - are not his comedies, but if I had a say, I would definitely go to the mat for Birdcage, Popeye and Death To Smoochy.  There's a chance that those are too hip for the room.  Also, Best of Times and Cadillac Man are not great comedies, but Robin owns both of them in his irresistible way.

Good Morning, Vietnam is a personal favourite and one I voted for, but I don't think it has much cachet these days so would be surprised if it popped up. Mrs. Doubtfire is more likely to make an appearance, that one seems to be remembered pretty fondly by most I've talked to in real life.

SNL rundown:

The Blues Brothers must make it.  I love Neighbors but it's just too weird for that crowd.

I'm sure that Caddyshack and Animal House are on there, although neither quite make classic status for me personally.  Neither would Stripes, but it already has its place.

For Chevy, I'd guess Fletch will be his last grasp.  They might go for one of the Goldie Hawn ones.  But speaking of Dudley Moore, they should have 10 and Arthur, but I doubt it.

Trading Places is justifiably an obvious slot.  48 Hours and Beverley Hills Cop should be, but some of them may lump them into the 'action' category instead.

For Bill, I'm guessing Ghostbusters is top ten.  Tootsie should make it.  But for my money, I prefer his great 'comeback' streak of Scrooged, Quick Change, What About Bob? and Groundhog Day.  Of those, the latter will probably make it, but the best of the bunch is the consistently overlooked Quick Change.  Also, I'm rooting for either Royal Tenenbaums or Life Aquatic, but I'm afraid the humor doesn't always register with common audiences.

Poor Gilda.  Her films with Gene Wilder were awful, and I will be shocked if they manage to place the Mike Nichols' film of her Broadway show.

Among the other Eddies, I think it'll most likely go to Nutty Professor or something.  Should be Bowfinger, but again, too weird.  Or Life, too black.

Honorary SNL: Steve Martin - Everyone loves The Jerk, and I suppose it deserves it, but I prefer Man With Two Brains and Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid.  I suspect all three are contenders, and Planes Trains and Automobiles is a given.  They'll probably go with softer fare like All of Me or Roxanne, and they deserve it too.  Father of the Bride?  I will pitch a bitch.  (I have no objection to Dirty Rotten Scoundrels either.)

Honarary SNL: Richard Pryor - It'll be interesting if they let In Concert slide.  It is classic and it was a theatrical film, unlike most stand-up specials, and it's also superior to perhaps the more famous Sunset Strip.  Of his actual films, meh.  Rich just didn't have a whole lot of luck with scripts.  His best films, Blue Collar and Jo Jo Dancer, are his least funny.  They'll probably go with Silver Streak or Stir Crazy if anything at all, but neither one really deserves that status.

I still can't believe that Wayne's World bested Austin Powers.  Total WTFsville.

Honarary: Ben Stiller (yeah, he was there for a second): Probably Zoolander is the only one left in contention after Tropic Thunder, although the latter is better.

Chris Rock:  Let's not pretend that anyone there are fans.

Of the remaining Sandlers, I dunno.  The Wedding SInger is one of the few I don't hate, but it's still hardly a classic.  Low bar.  I'm not even entertaining any of the Farley/Spade films, or any of the Schneider or Kattell.  In fact, I may be through with any of the future SNL projects, even though I do enjoy some of the Will Forte or Adam Samberg efforts.  Motherfuck some Bridesmaids.

Oh yeah, Will Ferrell.  Most of his films aren't very good, but Anchorman will get a slot.  For extra credit, the Ferrell-adjacent Walk Hard deserves to make it.  Old School is mostly awful, and, for the love of piss, will probably not be the only Vince Vaughn film on the list.

Re: Eddie, Bowfinger probably could have made my list if I'd spent more time chewing it over. TBH, Delirious is probably the funniest thing he's ever done, but I wouldn't feel right voting for a stand-up special. And I suspect the replies would he hideous if that or Raw showed up.

I think the only Will Ferrell movie other than Step Brothers I wouldn't mind seeing pop up is The Other Guys, which actually has him act instead of shouting like an asshole. Step Brothers acknowledges he's an asshole, making it preferable to Anchorman and Talladega Nights. The latter is only saved by John C. Reilly and Gary Cole.

I honestly feel a little pity for those who feel like they have to choose between Chaplin and Keaton.  I'd like to kick Penn Jillette in the balls for popularizing the distinction.

Makes me wonder how insufferable all of those Beatles/Stones debates must have been

Crumbs, we need to talk about Blues Brothers.  No laughs even when they get blown up in a phone booth by a rocket launcher, only to immediately start grabbing for all of the stray spare change?

"Blues Brothers is alright. There are other Dan Aykroyd comedies I'd rather watch."

Plural.  Oookay.

"Loved Monty Python's Flying Circus as a kid but I've never been a fan of their movies."

What in the god-loving fuck?

"It’s funny though, cause I generally love British humor. Their comedy is great. But Monty Python has never been something I’ve found hilarious."

???  I just want to kick some of these bastards in the balls.

"I don’t really like The Blue Brothers. I don’t get it. Not my generation I guess."

If "your generation" is the first excuse you reach for, I don't think the fault lies with the film.

"Raising Arizona is virtually unheard of in lists of Nicholas Cage movies. When people think of Nick Cage they usually reach for one of his more well-known movies like Face/OffLord of War, or whatever most recent drek he's roped himself into.  He's mainly known for unintentionally comedic roles, not intentionally comedic roles."  (Includes gif of Wicker Man remake as if that proves a goddamn thing.)
