Saxophonist Wayne Shorter passed away yesterday at the age of 89.  Not only a fine sax player, but an integral songwriter of the 1960s period, working with the Art Blakey Jazz Messengers, eventually with the second classic Miles Davis Quintet (composing significant cuts like "E.S.P', "Orbits", "Footprints", "Prince of Darkness", "Masquelero", "Nefertiti", "Water Babies", "Sanctuary"), and on to the founding of Weather Report.

I'll probably post several select cuts in the music thread over the weekend.  Here's a good overview in the meantime:

I guess I should mention Tom Sizemore.  A tragedy of years of substance abuse.  I don't hate the guy, although I've never thought he was much more than a servicible character actor, from cocky sidekick to criminal lieutentant #2.  But, hey, what have I starred in, right?  Anyway, I'll just throw out this great cameo from Always Sunny which reflects a little self-parody.

Topol, best known for Fiddler On The Roof, dead at 87.

Maybe because of my particular age, Topol will always be Dr. Hans Zarkoff first and foremost.

That was the next one I would mention.  But I still think of it like "that Bond movie with Dr. Zarkoff".

Learn something every day.  Apparently Robert Blake's obsidian heart has only just given out today, rather than several years ago when I assumed it did.

Jim Gordon, one of the finest session drummers of classic rock, played with goddamn everybody - Eric Clapton, John Lennon, George Harrison, Joe Cocker, Beach Boys, The Byrds, John Lee Hooker, Tom Waits, Steely Dan, Frank Zappa, Traffic, CS&N, etc etc.

Very disappointing how his obituaries are eclipsing his immense talent and accomplishments by focusing on the fact that he was a diagnosed schizophrenic who would murder his mother and spend 40 years in prison/institutions.  Way to distigmatize illness, guys.  A troubled man, but doesn't deserve the demonization.

A couple of my favorite of his drum breaks:

I think I was listening to his Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence soundtrack the day he died.
That's some quality stuff.
I really need to get my hands on the early YMO records. I only have one of the later ones and it's a bit meh.

Regarding Topol, I remember being obsessed with wanting to see Fiddler on the Roof when I was really young. There were certain movies I'd see advertised in the newspaper that I found myself obsessing over while knowing absolutely nothing about them (Rocky Horror, The Stunt Man, Hanky Panky, The Wall and this) and Fiddler was one of them. I can remember my family constantly telling me 'trust me, you won't like it'. But I didn't think anything with that title could be anything less than amazing. I thought they were idiots keeping me away from something great.

I did eventually see it in my mid twentites and they were right. I didn't like it.

There were a lot of films that I wanted to see at a young age that my parents thought were odd/inappropriate, because I used to watch a lot of Siskel & Ebert and scour the HBO guide and glom onto whatever fit my fancy.  Fiddler on the Roof wasn't one of those films.  But I did watch it at a young age, maybe about 7 or 8.  And whatever.  It was Ok.  Meh.  No anti-semitism involved, because at that same age I also thought that Frisco Kid was hilarious.  ("Look at that tookus!")

I finally feel like I'm an official resident of Hamilton. Some greasy middle-aged man just threatened to run me over with his truck. This is the proper city life I so miss. Couldn't stop laughing with joy all the way to the bar.

Welcome to my world.  I almost got hit twice on Saturday alone, one guy in a dark car driving without headlights at 8:30 PM, and another who doesn't understand that pedestrians have a right-of-way when crossing a parking lot entrance.  And don't even get me started on no one using their turn signals any more, and trying to run me over because I didn't know they were turning onto my crosswalk.  Assholes aplenty.

I just watched the Bruceploitation movie Fist of Fear, Touch of Death, which turned out to have an awful running joke about Fred Williamson getting repeatedly mistaken for Harry Belafonte. Not the greatest tribute.
