I suppose I should clarify that when I said "strong opinions", I was referring to people breathlessly taking sides with either Depp or Heard and decrying anyone who doesn't agree with their exact stance as enabling abuse or something to that effect. I'm sure someone smarter than me has examined the weird and gross thinkpiece ecosystem that's formed around this situation.

Like, I understand there's always been an exploitative gossip/tabloid industry, but I've found something particularly obnoxious about how this situation has been wrapped up in a veneer of social justice related indignation.

I usually try to avoid anything invoking words like "cuck". (Note: The thread in the Movie subforum is parody and intended to explore and make fun of this exact "social justice related indignation".)

And this is similar to those who would use Jussie Smollett to undermine hate crimes against black/gay people. Someone who cares about the validity of victims' voices should be able to see past the 2 dimensional frame of this story and see that Heard is not a reliable spokeswoman for the cause. Lack of evidence aside (because few true victims, especially after a certain amount of time, have that either), we can ask why Heard wrote her WaPo op-ed in the first place. She wasn't out in front of those women leading the #timesup and #metoo movements, but self-appointed herself as a spokeswoman for the cause. The fact that she refuses to acknowledge that she was referring to Depp is not only disingenuous (how many domestic abusers has she had?), but also reminds how she was legally barred, by the conditions of the divorce settlement (that she signed as willingly as Depp), from publicly discussing the details of the divorce settlement. It just doesn't look like a good faith move.

And what positives have come from the op-ed? Who did it help, or harm? What work has Heard brought to the movements, other than clicks and drama? Turns out she didn't even fulfill her commitment for charitable donations to victims' orgs.

But I still feel icky because all of this, despite being evident, still plays into these toxic redpill men's rights grievances, much as Smollett's evident deception plays into those who prefer to believe that hate crimes are hoaxes, propaganda or worse.

And as for Depp? Well, there's a lot there to unpack as well. It has less to do with this particular case, but clearly this man is a walking embarrassment of coke-fried pretensions and mystical horseshit. He said that Heard making the case that he was a burnt-out husk of hipster garbage was "an easy target", and, yeah, because he's been advertising it himself for years.

I'm more confused than offended. I'm pretty sure that you have to smoke a whole lot of crack before "cracky" sounds like an acceptable burn on a stranger.

Is it that our society is getting more infantile? I got these 4th grade-level insults. It seems like a regression back to the worst playground. There's a news item about a fight in Times Square where someone was killed. Big whoop, right? Over what? Drugs? Prostitute? Nope. Over a toy at Dave & Buster's, an arcade. Oh, these young punks, crazy kids. You know how they rumble. Nope again. These were two 40 year olds. Over a toy. Killed. I did not see any mention of children in that article. And I'm the one supposedly smoking crack out here.
