Sorry. Don't know if you have a way to retrieve these things.

Thankfully it wasn't a complicated post to mostly pull from memory, so no worries.

Re: Another Award Season In Hell

Under my radar, the reactions to The Substance after its Cannes premiere has definitely piqued my interest.  I'm not familiar with the writer/director, Coralie Fargeat, who has one previous film, Revenge under her belt, but the new one is irresistibly described as "body horror fairy tale".

Re: Another Award Season In Hell

Guy Maddin, continuing his collaboration with Evan and Galen Johnson, debuted the new Rumours over the weekend, a surreal satire about international politics starring Cate Blanchett and Alicia Vikander.  No trailer, but good word of mouth.

The Apprentice, a film about the younger years of Donald Trump, directed by Holy Spider's Ali Abbasi and written by (frequently accurate) gossip writer for Vanity Fair, Gabriel Sherman, has gotten a slightly more mixed reaction, as well as slapped with a Trump lawsuit.  How much of its reaction, both positive and negative, are more about the subject than the film itself has yet to be seen.

Re: Another Award Season In Hell

Cannes screening of Oct 7 documentary Bearing Witness canceled under orders from the IDF amid security concerns.

It's not made clear how the IDF can order the cancellation of a screening in Cannes, but it's clear the presenters somehow needed to ask permission. Just another awards season in Hell.

The film wasn't technically part of the festival, so the decision to cancel wouldn't have come from the Cannes organizers.

But there must be a reason why it was the IDF's call. It may just be that the IDF had intel and the organizers played it safe, but the way the article tells it, the IDF didn't advise them to cancel. It was an order. The presenters apparently had to ask permission of the IDF to screen at the chosen location. Maybe just something to do with protocol or the IDF's ability to ensure security, who knows.

I have to assume, since all of the footage - body-cam and security camera footage - appears to have come directly from the IDF, that there's definitely a cooperative component between them and the producers of this film.  The article notes that another screening in Paris was also shut down to a similar security threat.  And, again, this screening, while at Cannes, was not part of the Cannes Film Festival, so the Cannes organizers played no role here whatsoever.

Nice work, amigo! I've been enjoying this list all day. I never knew Cannes had so many varied awards, and of such character! Palm Dog, Cinéfondation, Prize of the Ecumenical Jury! Very educational.

Suck it, Hollywood!

Yeah, I’m taking the week or so off like I normally do. I’ll post my picks when I’m on my laptop, kind of a pain to copy from a spreadsheet on my phone.

I'm thankful for any contributions.  Are you contributing to any other (ie, real) publications or sites this time?

Jesus fuck.  A documentarian known for the most vicious preservations of evil (Act of Killing) decides to make his fiction feature debut about the post-apocalypse....and it's a musical.  I didn't even need to see Tilda standing there to know she must be involved in this.  And Michael Shannon too.  And all of these people are worried about Coppola bringing it all down.

nah, too much bullshit, too many people. it was never really my bag, and would only go to shows if someone got a bunch of comped tickets to shit and wanted someone to go with them. and even then, i'd be dragging my feet.

Yeah, I did 2 packages of 10 tickets each. The ordering process was a little annoying in that they made me check out 1 package before picking the tickets for the other, but otherwise the system was less buggy than previous years.

Nah, I basically haven't tried pitching to any sites for a while. (I kinda gave up after my first rejection lol)
