The Mosfilm Youtube channel has recently posted some really good transfers of Tarkovsky and Eisenstein films, and has a pretty deep catalogue of many other Russian films (many of which I am not familiar with so recs are encouraged). Anyway, it's a good excuse to grab some digital copies of these films without the trouble of ripping my own physical copies.

Yeah, that's a great channel although it's been a while since I've been digging. I'll give a hearty recommendation for this one, a western adventure film with a style that feels more experimental than the American counterpart. Apparently it's considered a classic in the country and is regularly watched by astronauts as a ritual before missions.

Not sure how big you are on Sergey Bondarchuk (I think you mentioned you've seen his War and Peace adaptation?), but in the spirit of the above, this has a much more experimental style than you'd expect from a propagandistic war film.

Not Mosfilm, but this one also from Bondarchuk has similarly impressive battle sequences to War and Peace.

The clips I posted appear to have been uploaded in the last few months, and appear to be upgrades to what had been previously available. Also, back when dug on their site, the software I used to extract Youtube vids didn't always grab the subs unless they were hardcoded.

I watched this film in a classroom, pan-and-scan on not the biggest television. I wasn't too impressed, but I owe it a proper viewing once I can get a month or two of free time.

I've never seen the pan and scan version, but my understanding is that Bondarchuk actually shot a 4:3 version at the same time as the theatrical cut, and that this 4:3 version is what was commonly available on home video for years. They Fought for Their Country was shot in 4:3 and looks great, but the visual impact of the movie is quite a bit different from the theatrical War and Peace.

I don't think I saw Paul Simon, but I was curious how simulated or not some of the sex was. 'Cause those Don't Look Now rumors and all.

I had to watch that clip as soon as I posted it. This is one that I don't have on DVD or digital, only an old VHS from IFC back in the day. Nicolas Roeg is the true mad genius of 70s British cinema. Sorry, Ken.

From Ellis Haizlip's classic PBS show Soul!, this isn't a film, technically, but feature-length, worth diving into and bygod, I bet Godard would approve.

Speaking of Carmilla, I went looking for a copy of a 1980 Polish television version, and it is on Youtube but unsubbed. (It's under the title "C" for anyone interested.)

So instead, here's an episode of Shelly Duvall's Nightmare Classics, a 1989 Showtime series, with Meg Tilly and Ione Skye in a version of Carmilla from the Civil War.
