I picked up the 20th Anniversery 4CD edition of the Of Montreal album Sunlandic Twins.  This made me feel really old, because I wasn't really even young when it came out, although at the time it was one of those "Aught" albums which made me feel a little younger.  And on the brighter side, it now makes me want to take stock of those similar aught records which seemed like rejuvenating fresh air in that decade dominated by American Idol pop-gloss.  So here's what I consider the best albums of the '00s, but in no particular ranking, because ranking is for nerds, fools and assholes.

Sunlandic Twins is definitely top ten or twenty though, I'm confident.

The easy part is placing Grizzly Bear comfortably in the top three artists of the decade, but I'll still be hard pressed to choose between these two classic records from 2006 and 2009.  And, let's face it, 2004's Horn of Plenty is pretty great, as are their EPs and remixes, and even grab Dan Rossen's side project Department of Eagles (In Ear Park) if you get a chance.

And I'll be getting to Bradford Cox (Deerhunter, Atlas Sound) eventually, but for now...

Deerhunter is another band where it's difficult to pick a favorite among their '07-'09 output, but the safe choice is the above Cryptograms, which is perhaps their best regarded, a mix of guitar drone ambience and psychedelic pop, making Deerhunter the clearest heir of the shoegaze, slowcore school of My Bloody Valentine and early Spiritualized.  And at the same time, leader Bradford Cox had the parallel project, Atlas Sound, where it may be easier to pick their '09 Logos, but even then, both projects released so many singles, EPs and online-only downloads.  If I'm being honest, I might just pick the EP Rainwater Cassette Exchange as my very favorite of their releases.

Right from the get-go, Radiohead was establishing the mood for the decade with these twin releases, recorded simulataneously and released about 6 or 7 months of each other.  (The recent Kid A Mnesia collects both albums on vinyl with bonus tracks.)

Oh, the Strokes and The Stripes.  In 2001, these bands seem to have kicked off a retro guitar garage band renaissance.  There are several adequate condidates that followed in their wake - The Kills, The Hives, The Datsuns, The Mooney Suzukis, and definitely last and probably least The Black Keys.  But for awhile they had their moment.  The Stripes' follow-up Elephant may be more popular and the preferred choice for many.  The Strokes, though, kind of flamed out pretty quick.  Some of their best songs were cut, like their beloved cocaine, out onto future albums, probably in the foresight that their material might start to get thin eventually.  These were the same dipshit executives who decided to replace the classic cover above with an ugly fractal and axe the song "New York City Cops" after 9/11 (both because of America!), but had tracks like "Under Control" and "You Only Live Once", which were already written and ready to go with their first album, had gotten proper release here, substituting a couple of the weaker tracks, then this could truly be called the greatest rock album of the 21st century.  As it is, it's merely great.
