Figured this was the right thread for this.

I've only seen Caligula once, early in the morning at a friends place after we woke up hung over.
I remember being vaguely fascinated by it, but mostly because of how unengaging so much fucking and violence could be. It was also astonishingly boring at the same time. So many dull cocks and anal fucking.
It's a lot to deal with when your head is blistered from four quarts of gin. Or maybe not enough.

That was kinda my takeaway too, but I’m open to giving it another chance.

I don't think an alternate cut will fix what was for me the prevailing problem which is that it's morbidly ugly.  This isn't just an issue of the transfer I watched (the initial DVD run), but with the original production values, poor lighting and generally just an unaesthetic visual palette.  One example that springs to mind is a nude Helen Mirren - definitely a case of "how can you muck this up?" - shot in a moldy dark blue.  I don't know how much of this is the fault of Tinto Brass (I've only seen a couple other of his films) or Bob Guccione's cheapness.  Maybe a combination of the two.

I know the production was famously compromised, so I’m not sure how easily Guccione’s influence can be excised beyond removing the hardcore scenes. (Although I remember those being shot/lit noticeably differently from the rest of the movie.)

I suppose some the ugliness is intentional, but Salon Kitty was quite stylish from what I remember. So not sure who to blame.

Putting the debacle of the last Megalopolis trailer behind us, here's a more interesting promotional item, Coppola in Kobini, surrounded in films and telling tales.

One trailer that I saw that has some promise.

(Someone at Netflix should get shot - hopefully by Feathers McGraw - for not releasing the latter before Christmas.  The fuck, assholes?)
