I understand Adam Sandler is doing another movie with the Safdies.

Movie of the Year 2023 (or whenever it comes out)

However, Soderbergh’s new one, Kimi, the only film released by New Line in 2022, is only on HBOmax. The injustice!

He should probably just go ahead and put out I Love You, Daddy.

He does own distribution rights, apparently. Looks like a screener rip is out there in the torrentosphere.

Yeesh, he did Pootie Tang? Well I'll admit it. I liked Pootie Tang. A coworker of mine said it was degrading. I won't call it a good movie but it made me laugh. Would've been better without Chris Rock's narration, but that wasn't Chris Rock's fault. I don't have any high expectations of Louis CK as a director, but I'm signed up for email notifications, so...

Pootie Tang is one of those movies that front-ends its stupidity, and is graced by not being nearly as stupid as it appears to be.  Not "good", necessarily, but thankfully not awful, and occasionally cute.

JJ, you're our Beatles man; what are your thoughts about this?

My understanding is that the film doesn't include much in the way of new footage or recordings, but I'm an avid archivist, so maybe that won't mean much to your common fan.

My impression is that the film (and the book on which it is based) is more of a advertisement for the newly reconstructed Rishikesh Ashram, the renovated place where The Beatles stayed which is now open for business.  Similarly, the film attempts to rehabilitate the Maharishi's reputation by suggesting that The Beatles were fooled by "rumors", and also, apparently, throws in a bit about some kind of CIA/KGB plots going on in the background.

Anyway, I honestly don't give a shit about it.

Apparently the ashram has been renamed the Beatles Ashram, because there's almost no 'shame' in shamanism.

Maybe it's just me but this new Elvis movie looks like a hunka burning garbage.

Tom Hanks looks like he's having fun, but otherwise I agree.

Oh, ffs.

During his childhood, Christopher Robin befriended Winnie-the-Pooh, Piglet, and their friends, playing games and also providing them with food. As he grew, these visits grew more infrequent, as did the food supply, causing Pooh and the others to grow increasingly hungry and desperate. When Christopher went to college, the visits stopped completely, causing them to become completely feral and unhinged, resulting in Eeyore getting killed at some point. Now, Christopher has returned to the forest alongside his new wife, hoping to introduce her to his old friends.  This causes them to go on a murderous rampage for human flesh as they antagonize a group of university girls who are occupying a rural cabin.

I wonder if Disney is secretly financing this in order to build a case for not allowing their other properties to lapse into public domain.  It's like a threat, really.

New George Miller, with Tilda and Idris

(Finally) new Andrew Dominik

New Todd Fields, with Cate Blanchett

No traillers, but other upcoming films -

White Noise (Noah Baumbach, from DeLillo's book, but Adam Driver is much too young for the middle-aged protagonist, imo);

The Whale (Darren Aronofsky, with a comeback from Brendon Fraser as an old fat fuck);

Bardo, False Chronicles of a Handful of Truths (Alejandro Inarritu)

No Bears (Jafar Panahi, which he shot secretly before getting thrown in jail in Iran)

Dead For a Dollar (Walter Hill, been a looong time since he's done anything good, but he's got Christoph Waltz and Willem DaFoe in this western.)

I'll let Rock tackle all of the more exciting releases, like Bullet Train, Prey, John Wick 4, Terminator: End of War, Beast and whatever this D&D thing is.  Actually, Prey looks promising, but I've said this before in the franchise

Also, there's new A24 horror films like the prequel to X and something called Bodies Bodies Bodies with Pete Davidson, because I think someone saw that I was curious whether I'm over the whole A24 thing and felt like putting me out of my misery.

I guess I offended Rock by designating him our action movie go-to guy.

Prey - yes, another in the Predator franchise

Guillermo del Toro's animated Pinocchio

Oliver Assayas' Irma Vep (with Alicia Vikander)

lol I barely keep up with new releases

Bullet Train looks like John Wick lite. I'm more excited for the real thing.

Prey looks good, and I think the director is a good sign, although the same could have been said about the last one, and yeesh.

Didn't know there was a new Terminator coming out. I actually did like that last one.

THE WITCH, PART 2: THE OTHER ONE

NO, THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE 2015 ROBERT EGGERS FILM OF THE SAME NAME.

This is the sequel to the 2020 Korean action/horror thrill ride The Witch: Subversion, which is not about witches, witchcraft, monsters or occult stuff of any kind. The closest thing I could compare it to is 2011’s Hanna, but only in certain respects. I’ve been eagerly awaiting this sequel ever since I saw The Witch: Subversion on Netflix a year ago, which I do recommend. I haven't included any trailers here because some of the trailers give too much away, while others give the wrong impression, so, seek them out at your own risk. Admittedly I don’t see how this sequel will avoid becoming two–dimensional in comparison to the dynamic of the first one, but I’m definitely willing to give it a chance and I'm hopeful it will be a plenty good time, regardless. Released in select theaters in June, The Witch, Part 2: The Other One is not yet available for streaming in North America, but given the popularity of the first installment, we have reason to expect it soon will be (it is, however, currently available in South Korea on Google Play, for what that’s worth).

Re: Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio:
"It's a story you may think you know, but, heh, you don't [It's actually an Italian story, about Italian characters, speaking in English accents]."
