I was fully prepared to take this as a compliment until I remembered that Pynchon was still alive.

Alice Munro turns out to be alive as well, so we've still got two.

She can squeeze into Milan Kundera's seat, who died last week when no one was looking.

Legend

No idea her son had committed suicide. That doesn't bode well for what may have happened here.

She's had a number of incidents where she's threatened suicide, sometimes explicitly sometimes vaguely, on her social media accounts.  At least twice, I believe, resulted in wellness checks and hospitalization.  And then she became a fundamentalist Muslim, and started attacking non-Muslims on Twitter.

I don't want to use her death to drudge up all of the negatives in her life and behavior, I've mentioned much of this elsewhere before (I think in defending Prince against her accusations which were not substantiated).  It would be similar to what I wrote a few months ago about Jim Keltner, the classic rock drummer who suffered from schizophrenia.  We can name the disease with sympathy and compassion.  O'Connor suffered from BPD and depression (diagnosed, but possibly other things as well) which caused a lot of her erratic behavior.  Anyone who still has Lion and the Cobra and Don't Want What I Have Not Got knows that there is a pure soul there.  But a manic, troubled soul as well.  I truly hope that she rests in peace.

edit: I hate it when I misspell a name in an obituary

There's no question her mental health has been in serious question for a long time, and as a result, has said and done some not great things. And I've always been one who both doesn't think mental illness completely absolves one of their bad behavior, but also try my best not to judge them on that bad behavior (at least not have it obscure what seemed good about them in the first place)

And those two records are enough for an entire lifetime. More than most people will ever do.

Also, NYC pornographer Shaun Costello, although this is one that likely only concerns me (and maybe Crumb as he’s seen Forced Entry).

Sinead O'Connor, Paul Reubens, William Friedkin and Robbie Robertson are all artists who've died recently who have made deeply impactful work for me, and which I really haven't had any way of articulating. I guess I'm not much in the headspace to reconcile with this feeling of constant loss. Maybe one day I can articulate what each of them meant to me.

A lesser noted death from last week was Erkin Koray, one of the leading figures in the 'Anatolian Rock' scene, merging prog-rock with Turkish folk.  This album is pretty much the only example of this genre in my collection.
