Well, I just can't fucking win with these image links. Something has changed, maybe. The images look fine on the edit screen, then when I click "submit" I get all that code crap like above.

JEEESUS CHROIST!!!

Anyway, it's the thought that counts, right?

A good rule of thumb is that an image URL shouldn't be more than 30 or 40 characters.  Less than a hundred, definitely.

A URL the size of a small novella, for example, probably isn't going to work.

Technically, it's the Year of the Water Rabbit.

Apparently, the Earth's Core stopped spinning some time in the past decade.  That might explain a few things....

Well, you learn something new every day.

Apparently, the actor Zachary Levi isn't Jewish.  Am I supposed to feel bad about this?  The prejudice of assuming this individual Levi was a descendent of the biblical Levites?  Apparently, Levi is his middle name, and he didn't want to go by his real name Zachary Pugh?  Maybe he thought Levi could get him a foot in certain doors?  And he says he's actually lost work because producers thought he was "too Jewish"?  Does that actually happen?  How is Zack Braff still getting work?  "Oh, sorry, Jonah Hill, you're a little too shpilkis."  Or maybe (I'm just saying) some of these producers were more like, "Dude, who are you trying to fool with this name?"

And to top it off, Zach Levi isn't just not Jewish, but superfucking-Christian?  Like going on the 700 Club kind of Christian?  I'm seriously getting George Santos vibes from this.

Goddamn these Snapchat ads.  "Rather than use your mind's eye, what if you could see through your eye's mind."

The decriminalization of weed is definitely going have its downside.

As some of you know, I have a fondness for Jeopardy.  It's a harmless daily routine that provides a brief but valuable synaptic exercise, and the resulting humility is also refreshingly instructive.

Since I'm not on Twitter or Facebook (anti-synaptic routines where humility is a liability), I missed out on last week's controversy, as such, regarding a recent Jeopardy champion, Yogesh Raut.  I remember Yogesh, who won a few games earlier this month.  I read where he had an "unhinged rant" that had something or another to do with Jeopardy being racist.  Perhaps unsurprisingly, the first several articles on a quick google search had very little actual direct quotes from these posts that Yogesh put out, and mostly focused on the (almost entirely exclusive to social media) subsequent outrage from the kinds of people who don't watch Jeopardy.  "I don't watch Jeopardy, but I'm extremely...." began one actual response.  Other articles had a confusing mix of quotes from Yogesh, some complete, but jumbled between his original post and his posts responding to those who were attacking him.  So did he actually call Jeopardy racist, or is he saying that these attacks from people who feel he should be grateful to be in America (he's an American citizen) are racist, and evidence of America's racial problem?

The answer is a bit complicated.  I finally found a more complete version of the original series of Facebook posts that sparked the issue, and was able to figure out some context.  The posts didn't amount to an unhinged rant (some people read everything online in a ranting voice), but they also weren't very coherent.  Yogesh isn't very kind to Jeopardy, he called it a "glorified reality show", and claimed that the producers valued contestants who were "telegenic" more than knowledgeable.  But he also gave a back-handed praise by calling the show "reasonably entertaining".  He tried to draw a distinction between Jeopardy, as an entertainment institution, and what he calls the "quizzing community", making no bones that he considers the latter to be a far more respectable representation of this skill of general knowledge.  (He loathes the term "trivia".)  "Jeopardy! is not the problem; it's centrality to American society is. There will never be a healthy quizzing culture in this country until we learn to stop pretending that Jeopardy! is important".  *me-ow*  So as long as Jeopardy is placed "on a pedestal", it's "bad for the future of quizzing", because I guess people who spend a half-hour a day watching and enjoying the show can't muster the strength to go out to other quizzing activities that may be locally available.  Or something.

And in this attempt to use Jeopardy to make a larger comment on America's general disdain for knowledge, he did, somewhat clumsily, try to shoe-horn every social proplem he could think of, from racism to sexual predators.  So he didn't accuse Jeopardy or anyone associated with the show of being racist, but, by the show's very nature of its "centrality to American society", then naturally "actual" quizzing has to suffer, and this leads to more endemic corruption: "The fact that actual quizzing continues to be a fringe subculture in the shadows is what allowed racists, misogynists, and outright sexual harassers to thrive in collegiate quizbowl for so long."  I'm not going to lie.  I have no fucking idea what he's talking about here.  I'm incapable of cognitively making the connection between watching Jeopardy, collegiate quizbowls and the harms these two things are creating by pushing "actual quizzing" into the shadowy margins.  Therefore, Yogesh concludes, Jeopardy, as an entertainment institution, is "fundamentally incompatible with true social justice."  *woof*

And this schism that apparently exists between a mainstream trivia show like Jeopardy and the more authentic quizzing community is directly attributable to America's anti-intellectual culture.  Somehow, the very success of a show like Jeopardy is proof that Americans don't value true knowledge and learning.  And the social media backlash against him, where people called him things like "arrogant", is some kind of proof of this.  So let's look at the more specific issues that he mentions in one of his posts:

• Why rewards, recognition, and platforms in quizzing are distributed so anti-meritocratically, and what can be done about that

• Why game shows that don't reward quizzing ability hold so much power

• Whether the lack of visibility of real quizzing has anything to do with the immense prevalence of racist and misogynist men in positions of power and the culture of silence around abuse

• Why the US is the only country that refers to quizzing as "trivia," and about why this culture shows so much contempt toward knowledge that doesn't directly feed capitalist machines

• Why negative stereotypes about quizzers, as well as pseudoscience that "others" them, continue to abound

• How white people ignore and passively accept these stereotypes and pseudoscience because the harm they do is borne primarily by women and people of color

• Why complaints about racist exclusion and refusal of accommodation are dismissed as "literally trivial" just because they happen in the quizzing world, as though it's obvious that "trivia" is more important than racial equity

The "anti-meritocracy" thing has the potential to be significant, but it's important to point out that Yogesh has not mentioned anything involving something truly scandalous like rigging questions for favored candidates.  Instead, he says that the show values contestants who are telegenic, which is sadly probably true.  It'd be interesting to hear from any prospective contestants who excelled at the early tests and trials but who were inexplicably passed over for the broadcasts.  It would also be interesting to hear about any changes to the process of vetting contestants since the death of Alex Trebek.

The second issue is confusing.  Is he suggesting that Jeopardy doesn't reward quizzing ability?  Or that most other games shows don't?  The latter is clearly the case, and it's always a morbidly fascinating question why people watch the trash that they watch on television, but in such a case, why then single out the only show, or at least the predominant show, that does reward quizzing ability.  It seems that even in a worst case scenario, if Jeopardy isn't vigorous enough quizzing for Yogesh's big brain, then wouldn't it still be valuable for inspiring a deeper engagement with quizzing?  Like a gateway quizzing?  Has Yogesh even seen Family Feud?

As for the correlation between the "lack of visibility of real quizzing" and the "immense prevalence" of racist abusive misogynists, I'm going to go ahead and call bullshit on that.  I love trivia as much as anyone (except maybe Yogesh), but I'm not convinced in its power to solve all of the world's predatory prejudices.

America isn't the only country that uses the word "trivia".  That claim is siily enough to not even bother with the correlation between that word and anti-intellectualism.

I have absolutely no idea what kind of pseudoscience is currently being used to other-ize quizzers.  I'm going to go ahead and suggest that Jeopardy does not sponsor such pseudoscience.

I guess that means that I'm either ignoring or passively accepting this pseudoscience because it makes my white manhood feel better.  I will, however, point out what should be obvious to anyone that this culture of anti-intellectualism - which does exist, and isn't even confined to America's borders - hardly excludes females or POC communities.  Ignorance is one of the more stable universals in human nature.

So, while I don't condone or respect the kind of social media attacks that people feel entitled to inflict on each other, I think that Yogesh's statements are simply too convoluted to earn any outrage.  It's the kind of nonsense woke word-jumble that's become all too typical online.  Just throw every grievance at the wall and see what sticks.  When they start putting quizzers on the trains, then maybe I'll work up some concern over it.

I haven’t engaged with this particular controversy (at a glance, Raut’s claims seem laughable), but this is something I’ve found increasingly (and annoyingly) common. A problem (real or imagined) can’t just be one problem. It has to have the entire book of social justice concerns thrown at it because really, every single problem is an indictment of the system we live in. (And yes, conservatives do this too from the other direction.)

Just add a couple substitutions: "social justice" to "critical race theory"; "culture of silence" to "cancel culture"; "capitalist machines" to "Obamacare".

One point of clarification is needed from the linked article above:

James Holzhauer, the third highest-earning Jeopardy contestant of all time, tweeted on Jan. 24 in response to an article about Raut that “anyone who’s ever used social media to criticize Jeopardy or its producers should get a lifetime ban from the show.” He did not respond to a request for comment from BuzzFeed News.

Holzhauer is being sarcastic, and he's used his Twitter account to criticize Jeopardy's producers on numeous occasions, including throughout last year's Mike Richards debacle.  He is not advocating for anyone's lifetime ban from the show.  He's mocking the overinflated outrage.

Hey Crumb, as an Ontarian of a certain vintage, you might find this interesting. The Junk Filter podcast recently did an episode on the history of pay TV in Canada. Not sure if it’ll jog any fond (or not so fond) memories on your end. This stuff is before my time, but i do have fond memories of at least one cable channel, so I got a kick out of it.

Ah C Channel! I thought I imagined that. Could never find any reference to it anywhere on the internet. I used to watch some magic program on that

We had Superchannel right from the get go and it was the greatest. Before VCRs this was the way to cram as many movies into your head as possible. I was always frustrated that only First Choice would get the F13 movies...we got the fog, though...and Saturday the 14th

I definitely didn’t have “John Tory sex scandal” on my 2023 bingo card.

Guess he didn’t get enough to eat at home.

John Tory?!? lol

Normally I'd be fine with a conservative politician  resigning in disgrace, considering that ever since Stephen Harper an awful lot of notable members of the PC have been grotesque or pathetic human beings. But he, even though he had some ultimate philosophies I didn't necessarily agree with, did not seem to play by the purely partisan rulebook that has dictated so much terrible politics recently. He was perfectly invisible and perfectly competent (as far as I could tell).

I feel that, more likely than not, his successor will be a piece of shit. I admittedly have no idea who this would be, nor the process of what happens during a mayoral resignation (I assume someone steps in temporarily until another election?)

The mayoral race at the moment looks like it’ll be a shit show.

Funniest thing right now would be for Tory to run a dirtbag candidacy like Rob Ford back in the day. Sleaze it up. “In the Mayor who fucks.” Etc.
