I haven't watched too many movies over the last week or two, but I have been immersed in music. I thought, as a possible conversation stirrer, I'd repost some of the yearly music lists from the other place. I had the tendency to avoid redundancy, so I would rarely repeat previously mentioned albums, even though these would clearly be contenders for any definitive list. And any way, I'm not, nor is crumbs, beholden to the strictly linear logic of such things anyway. Think of it more as a pool than a ladder.

I wish I had a handy discography for these German releases that has reliable release dates.

I still hate this version of "Chelsea Hotel". Maybe I'll come around on this one eventually.

Odds and Sods - The Who
This is one I never listen to anymore, and one (like Magic Bus) that I've made my own preferred selections based on what we now know was available. I'm assuming that some things were immediately vetoed, like British B-sides (no "Daddy Rolling Stone" or "Heaven and Hell"), no Townshend demos, etc. But I still would exchange a few things for others, and anyway this LP has become largely obsolete for my needs.

Be glad I didn't bust out the Alvin Stardust or the Andy Kim.
Lynn and Twitty look like they're already prepped for the wax museum, don't they? What's going on with Conway's head in that picture? A tiny Ethiopian face grafted onto a massive Neanderthal skull, topped with... the crest of an iguanadon? Maybe I shouldn't make fun; after all it could be a case of craniofacial fibrous dysplasia, with a sclerotic mop comorbidity. But is that a real face on Loretta, or the kind that peels off to reveal a member of SPECTRE? Is this where Michelle Bachmann took her cues, or could Bachmann possibly be Lynn and Twitty's illegitimate demon offspring?
As for the singing Coz, I've heard rumors of some potentially scandalous outtakes recently coming to light.
But ok, fun and joke aside, permit me to make a case for the Cobham. Kill those little computer speakers and don the headphones or crank the receiver; Welcome to Quadrant 4, truly one of the most amazing recordings I've ever heard:

My understanding is that it's indicative of several generations of Tennessee badger cross-breeding combined with the local custom of substituting typical forms of hair dye with fermented dip spit.

Not quick enough for the P. "I've got it."

Hey, that's not a 1974 cut.
What's not quick enough? Need me to link some Slayer? Some Diz/Bird? Some Ricky Skaggs?
...Some Dead Kennedys?

"Stratus" is on Cobham's Spectrum, dude.
But, sure, if you can find Slayer doing a cover of it, fine.

You know I know "Stratus" is on Spectrum.
I don't get the "not quick enough" part, but maybe that's because I'm not quick enough badabum. But fuck yeah, Prince does amazing covers of amazing music, so much so that I just automatically typed "does" instead of "did" without consciously doing so, so Prince's endorsement surely makes the case for Spectrum.
As cool as it sounds I can't imagine Slayer pulling it off.
Hmm...Cobham doing Reign in Blood, on the other hand...
Or Prince doing Reign in Blood. Surely Prince would've hated that idea, but I'm suddenly having a ball imagining what Prince covering Slayer would have sounded like. It would've slain, I'm sure.
But getting back to 1974.
Spectrum, all tracks recorded live over a 2–day period at Electric Lady Studios, most in one or two takes, got no fixing in the mix; on one track we can even hear guitarist Tommy Bolin break a string and continue playing, finishing the recording on the remaining five. "Taurian Matador" is not my favorite track on the album but anyway...
Bolin incidentally dies two years after Spectrum's release, having overdosed on "heroin and other substances, including alcohol cocaine and barbituates."
Jesus, Tom.
Vick's Vapo Rub???
That particular recording of "Quadrant 4" incidentally became one of my personal favorite tracks of all time, of any genre. We all have 'em. Maybe it's something developmental. Maybe that track was playing during my first time using the potty. "Triumph!" Drums so thunderous I dropped a deuce! "Big! Boy! Big! Boy!"

Goat has two great tracks, "Mr. D" and "Heartbreaker", and a couple of other decent ones, but I think it's their weakest record of the decade.
Mind Games is Lennon's most bland album. The title track's alright, but overproduced, doing the kind of song he had made fun of McCartney for doing (and it even uses the Bach-based descending scale that Paul used on "For No One" and "Hello Goodbye"). Lennon's New York might be a weaker album, but at least it has the Zappa tapes ("Scumbag", etc.).
