Tango In the Night is obviously not on par with Tusk (probably a desert island disc for me) or Rumours. And I just might put one of their first 'blues' records above it (I can never remember if it's the trashcan or the english rose record I like more)But after that, I'm relatively confident arguing that I prefer it to both their Self Titled and Mirage (both of which are also extremely good). Yes, Tango is slick to a fault, and it's a pretty uncool record in general that probably shaped a lot of peoples opinions on Fleetwood Mac being lightweight popsters...but as a pop record, it's incredibly good, and I have always been a happy sucker for these simple and glossy kinds of pleasures. Tango put a lot of what was passing as top 30 music at the time to shame.
Family Man and You and I are horrible though.

This video played after an ad for a "fire blanket" (for smothering small fires), which seems like a fine idea but the ad opened with a dramatic scene: a boy and mother panicking over a toaster fire, seemingly helpless to do anything about it, and neither of them seem to know what a fire extinguisher even is. They both brainstorm what to do but come up with nothing. It's just, "What do we DO???" Mom looks around frantically for a solution, and finally "Uhh... towel!" She grabs a dish towel and flaps it at the toaster to no effect. What's the boy doing to help? Filming. When mom's dish towel fails, they are fresh out of ideas. Of course it's followed by the sales pitch, but by then I was laughing uncontrollably and didn't care if these two lived or died. They're fictitious characters anyway so my conscience is clear. It's just funny, is what I'm sayin'.

Still commemorating the mighty Roy Haynes, here's a session which was only released in 1999, it features a drum trio of Art Blakey and Philly Joe Jones, along with Haynes, accompanied by latin percussionist Ray Barretto. If drumming be your sugar, sink into this with your sweet tooth.
